In a Vase on Monday: Wild Romance
The pink fluffy clouds of Sanguisorba flowers and the rosy tendrils of perennial sweet pea seem somehow romantic. But they are hard to tame in a vase… hence the title!
I have included another book recommendation as a prop: wild and romantic is how I would describe this retelling of the wildly romantic Brontë novel ‘Wuthering Heights’ – ‘Catherine’ by Essie Fox. If you liked the original you will love this! I keep a note of all the books I read and this one got my top points – ten out of ten!
Back to the vase. The sweet pea is sadly not the scented kind. But these perennial ones (Lathyrus latifolius) grow easily here and give some support and shelter from the sun to one of my clematis plants in the Oval Bed. They start flowering June to July and if the weather is not too brutal they should last a month or more.
The Sanguisorba is a tall one I bought as S. obtusa ‘Weihenstephan’ and it does well in full sun (also in the Oval Bed), although it would probably last longer if it had partial shade. I love those sugary pink ‘tails’.
I also added three Allium sphaerocephalon. These oval-shaped alliums are perfect for the Oval Bed, flowering from July and thus adding a bit of interest and height, dotted among Geraniums and Echinacea.
Many thanks to our host, Cathy. I am dedicating this vase to her Mum today, who was partly the inspiration for Cathy to gather flowers for vases.

Hope you are having a great summer!
Happy gardening!
