In a Vase on Monday: Sweet Summer Posy and a Winter Bouquet
I am joining Cathy at Rambling in the Garden once again for her weekly meme, where we are invited to share whatever we find blooming in or around our gardens in a vase. Such a lovely way to see what other people are growing around the world, so do go and visit her!
My first vase to share this week is a sweet smelling pastel mix of small summer bloomers. After a week of showers and gusty winds (and even some hail, thankfully not too big) any larger flowers are looking a bit unkept, but these shorter stems withstand almost everything.
I chose some Scabiosa – Pink Mist and Butterfly Blue, the creamy white Scabiosa ochroleuca, and the pink Knautia macedonica which looks like a scabiosa too. I cut a pale pink/white Sweet William which seems to be the only colour that has reseeded. Then a blue Campanula, a blue Geranium (name long forgotten) and some Briza media.
I also added a plume of meadow grass and a couple of the lovely frilly Dianthus superbus with the very unimaginative name ‘Colour Mix’.
And some Nigella. Possibly the most photogenic flower ever!
Then, as summer is on the doorstep, I started collecting some grasses and other materials to dry. This was a big success last year, and I would love to have a few more dried bouquets for winter vases again. This is what my winter bouquet looks like now…

It has been hung upside down in the cellar to dry, and I will share this one grey and chilly day next January! (And when my annuals start flowering I will have some colourful flowers to preserve too.)
Thankfully we still have the entire summer to look forward to. Now that the last of my seedlings (annuals and herbs) have been planted out, and the vegetable plants are growing well, I can relax a little and just focus on keeping everything fed and hydrated for the next few months. Another wave of very warm weather is on the way, but I am more prepared for it now than I was in May!
I will be sharing my Five Favourites for June later this week, so do join me if you can. In the meantime, have a wonderful gardening week!
