In a Vase on Monday: Glowing Globes
I wanted to call my vase ‘golden globe’ this week, but I believe that expression may lead to confusion… so it has been renamed to ‘glowing globes’ instead.
The main colours are lime green, yellow, peach and white, while the vase itself is a cracked glass bowl, its shape being mirrored by some of the flowers or seedheads it contains.
The lime green Euphorbia cornigera at the centre is called ‘Goldener Turm’ and is one of the best drought-proof plants I know.
The most obvious sphere perhaps is the Globe Thistle (Echinops ritro) at the centre. But equally striking is the Cephalaria gigantea seedhead (with a Scabiosa ochroleuca flower next to it)…
Here is the egg-shaped seedhead of Scabiosa ochroleuca…
Both of these flowers are absolute bee magnets. Take a look at this short piece of video showing the Cephalaria flowers close up:
And here it is again with a peachy Zinnia, and with the rounded Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus carota) behind…
The centre of Helenium (Sahin’s Early Flowerer) is also a striking shape, as is the white Nigella flower next to it. More ‘globes’…
Other golden flowers are Calendula, Heliopsis ‘Sommersonne’, Euphorbia seguieriana, Helichrysum italicum and then there’s a silvery touch too, from the leaves of Artemisia ludoviciana.

I hope to share some more photos of the completed pergola project soon, including the climbers I planted. I have either been too busy or the weather has been too hot for much photography, although this week is much cooler so far in the mid-20’s. (Celsius!) I have made the most of this cooler spell and I think I have finally caught up. One positive thing about the lack of rain has been the lack of weeds, but watering newer plants, containers and vegetables has been time-consuming too. How is your summer progressing?
Many thanks to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for hosting this meme. Do go and visit her and see the blooms that she and others around the globe have found in their gardens to share today.
Happy Gardening!
