A Place to Sit
If you have followed my blog for a while you may remember we started making a seating area in the centre of the new Words & Herbs Bed last summer. Finally an update!
So just for fun,
Now that it’s done,
It is the time
to share – in RHYME!-
The story of a
pergola…
(Well, maybe not the whole story in rhyme, but some at least!
)
Last year we began, amid many rain showers,
and a bed was created full of fragrant flowers
The centre was reserved for a place to sit
where we can look at the garden and also smell it.
Summer went by and the middle grew weeds
while the new bed was planted with flowers and seeds
At last – the structure went up when autumn came round
And the rain, frost and snow would settle the ground
In spring it was levelled, ready to sow
but the season was frosty and progress was slow
The first climbers (more about them later) went in late March at last…
Which meant I could finally sow the grass!
It took quite a while for the grass to grow
But a month or so later it started to show
(More weeds than grass I suspect)
Then another few weeks and the plants began growing
I mowed the new grass and made a second sowing
The climbers are: Lonicera caprifolium and Lonicera heckrottii, Clematis integrifolia ‘Aromatica’ and Clematis tangutica, Rose ‘Ghislaine de Féligonde’ and Rose ‘Maria Lisa’, and Nasturtium, Sweet Pea and Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)
Meanwhile the honeysuckle started flowering in May
Then Clematis and roses also opened one day
Lonicera heckrottii was definitely the star…
—
and both honeysuckles have started climbing far.
(This one is L. caprifolium…)
Both roses flowered, but will need some time
before they are strong enough to really climb

Rose Ghislaine de Féligonde

In June Clematis ‘Aromatica’ was simply a stunner!
A shame it doesn’t go on all through the summer.
And Clematis tangutica has flowered from time to time,
although it hasn’t really started to properly climb.
Patience…

The Jasmine and Nasturtium did NOTHING! They are still more or less as big as when planted. I have no hope for the Jasmine as it froze back with just 2 degrees of frost in May. So there is still one side of the pergola to be planted with ??? in autumn. Any suggestions?
By June I could walk on the grassy area made
But the weather was hot and there was still no shade
By July I decided, despite the sun
The table and chairs should go in – the pergola is done!

One day in the future I hope it will be
a shady retreat for little old me!
Hope you enjoyed a little fun look at my place to sit. The sky is perfectly blue today and I may manage to sit there for just a few minutes for my morning coffee before it gets too hot! LOL!
Happy Gardening!
