In a Vase on Monday: Spring Fever

Spring fever: a feeling of restlessness often associated with the onset of spring

Well, it is officially spring according to meteorologists. But then, they have also told us that this winter was far too warm… not sure if they live on the same planet as me! LOL! So, after a very frosty night again, the sun is shining and the sky is blue, but the ground is only just starting to warm up. We are forecast some really nice temperatures though, with double figures by the end of the week, so I am optimistic!

I am pleased to be joining Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for her Monday meme, despite the tardiness of spring. My little arrangement this week uses some of the few spring flowers available to date. And yes, it is a new set of ‘vases’. 😉

I had to stand at the cashdesk while waiting to pay for a birthday card last week, and this pretty vase was nearby, beckoning; the bird motif just spoke to me, as I thought of the blackbirds that have been chattering away in our garden all week and the return of the housemartins only a few weeks away. So just as it was my turn to pay, I picked it up. Whoops!

From left to right:

Viola that has overwintered outside, in a container nestled up to the house and wrapped in straw.

Primula – they have been trying to flower for weeks, but looked so tatty and battered by the weather. Now they are finally looking a bit better.

Iris reticulata ‘Blue Note’ – although lighter than I expected, it is a very pretty blue. This is in a small container planted with anemones to follow on.

One of my two snowdrops. I will try growing some in pots next year!

One of two or three crocuses in flower. I think more will open today though as my morning round of the garden showed some green spikes emerging. Whoohoo!

Yes, I am suffering from spring fever, itching to get out and weed (can’t get weeds out of frozen soil) and trim back some shrubs (not a good idea if more hard frosts are still to come). And it is still too early to start sowing seeds here… But I have been planning the vegetable garden and seed growing, sorting through my seed packets, and I will be getting some fresh compost this week. 😃 I’ll share some of my seed choices for flowers very soon.

In the meantime, I hope you get lots of spring sunshine this week! And if the weather is obliging,

Happy Gardening!
