A Week of Flowers 2024: Day Two

Image
Welcome back to my Week of Flowers! At this time of year we need something to remind us of the beauty our gardens and nature offer us in the warmer months. Something to start our day off with a smile. So join me in sharing some of your brightest floral photos over the next week for A Week of Flowers 2024, going through till Friday December the 6th. Just one a day, or a few if you like, it doesn’t really matter. And even if you can’t post every day, perhaps you can contribute on one or two days. Then leave a link below my post for that day so others can find you. I loved seeing all the flowery posts linking into mine yesterday! Thank you! And keep them coming! Today I am showing off some of my Peonies and Poppies, flowering in May and June. They are loved by the bees and gardener alike! Paeonia lactiflora ‘Clare de Lune’ —— Paeonia lactiflora ‘Cuckoo’s Nest’ —— Paeonia lactiflora ‘Jan van Leeuwen’ —— Papaver orientale ‘Marlene’ —— Papaver orientale ‘Queen Alexandra’...

A Week of Flowers 2024: Day One

Image
Well, in the northern hemisphere at least, it is that time of year again… the weather is chilly and damp, skies are grey, and the garden is lacking in any significant colour. We need something to remind us of the beauty our gardens and nature offer us in the warmer months. Something to start our day off with a smile. So join me in sharing some of your brightest floral photos over the next week, going through till Friday December the 6th. Just one a day, or a few if you like, it doesn’t really matter. And even if you can’t post every day, perhaps you can contribute on one or two days. Then leave a link below my post for that day so others can find you. Let’s get started! To get us in the mood, some blue sky. Aaah, that’s nice. And now I will share some other blues that made me smile this summer. Veronica teucrium ‘Knallblau’ in May Campanula lactiflora ‘Prichard’s Variety’ in June Campanula again with Verbascum nigra ‘Album’ and Epilobium angustifolium ‘Album’, June Salvia ne...

Invitation for A Week of Flowers 2024

Image
This will be the fifth year of my ‘ A Week of Flowers ‘ – my way of spreading colour and cheer just when we need it most as grey November merges into dark December. And I am inviting all my blogging friends to join me! In 2024 I will start with Day One on Saturday 30th November, finishing with Day Seven on Friday 6th December . The idea is to post a bright and cheerful photo of something you grew this year (or even a few photos – I do tend to get carried away!), either each day of that week or simply when you can. Then leave a link in the comments under my post for that day, so everyone can find your flowers.   I hope to see you on Saturday!

In a Vase on Monday: November Beauty

Image
I look forward to my lovely Chrysanthemum ‘Anastasia’ blooming at the end of the garden season and was a little worried she wouldn’t make it this year… we had such a cool autumn and a very chilly and damp start to November, with little sunshine. But despite rain, snow and frosts she is finally in flower! I have given her a vase to herself, partly because she deserves it, but also because there is little to pick at the moment. I shall be ‘stretching’ my vase material over the next few weeks I suspect, although I do already have a Hellebore in flower. Anastasia is a hardy Chrysanthemum with small pompom type flowers. I think she looks stunning considering the weather we have had! Many thanks to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for regularly hosting this weekly meme. She also kindly organized a virtual meeting of a group of vase appreciators/creators last night and it was lovely to hear what has been giving other gardeners pleasure in their gardens this year. We also learned a l...

In a Vase on Monday: Eleven Years!

Image
It has now been eleven years since Cathy at Rambling in the Garden decided to post a vase of flowers from her garden and invite other bloggers from around the world to join her. And they did, growing into a lovely little well-rooted community of avid gardeners. Friendships have blossomed, seeds have been exchanged, and for those not near enough to meet in person there have even been zoom get-togethers of vase makers. In all those years (is it really eleven?!) Cathy has never let us down and has hosted this meme regularly, including a ‘prop’ and often a witty title to boot. So, first of all a big congratulations to Cathy, and a huge thank you! In the depths of winter in particular, this meme has been an inspiration and has kept my own blog going while the garden hibernates. There is always something to find out there, even if it is simply a mossy twig or a dried seedhead. To celebrate this special anniversary, we have been given the challenge to use the theme eleven for our vases t...

In a Vase on Monday: Envy in November

Image
What a grey month November is turning out to be! But then, that is pretty normal here, so indoor projects have taken priority recently. However, a brief sunny spell on Saturday gave me the opportunity to tidy up the garden a bit, and it was refreshing to see how much is still in flower. One lovely surprise was this Echinacea, ‘ Green Envy ‘, which is looking greener than ever! Naturally, my first thought was, ‘I could use that in my vase on Monday’ when I like to join Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for her Monday meme. And here is that vase… Another Echinacea is still flowering – E. ‘Sunrise’? I planted ‘Sunrise’ and ‘Harvest Moon’ next to each other in the Words and Herbs Bed (they are both lightly fragrant) and without seeking out the labels I cannot tell them apart. The fact that they are still sending up new buds is giving me hope that these will prove to be strong plants that survive our winter. The white aster is the same one I used last week, Aster ‘Ashvi’, still going...
